Blogging About it All

As modern music has expanded to include all kinds of cultural influences, including instruments and rhythms, audiences have been treated to instruments formerly foreign to them. There are songs featuring the sitar, the bodhran, bagpipes and all manner of instruments, but too few have featured an oud. On Leonard Cohen s Field Commander Cohen album, there was a beautiful oud featured, like a somber and slightly unusual guitar. The oud has a beauty that is almost weeping in its lyricism that is not as forceful as an electrical guitar or as soft as an acoustic guitar. The oud has a wonderful soft quality that could make almost any ballad more powerful and give any song an extra flavor missing from so many other songs out there. It gives an exotic quality, without sounding forced or too strange. The oud is a beautiful, haunting instrument that should be featured more often.
