A basal cell carcinoma is a cancer of the skin. It is the most common skin cancer. It is called a basal cell carcinoma as it originated in the basal layer of the skin. It only rarely metastasizes or spreads and is almost never fatal. Statistically almost a third of fair skinned people will develop a basal cell carcinoma. The superficial types are treated with chemicals and the deeper types are treated surgically. Sometimes freezing or cyrosurgery or radiotherapy is used. Most occur on sun exposed parts of the body. A skin biopsy is usually needed to confirm the diagnosis.
