If you are reasonably young and suffering from high blood pressure, and especially if you are overweight, you are likely to receive advice from your doctor on changes to your lifestyle that could have a marked effect on your blood pressure. However, according to a recent study of more than 28,000 adults with high blood pressure, if you are over the age of 60 you are much less likely to receive advice about the benefits of such things as exercise or blood pressure lowering foods. Lifestyle changes should always be the first line of attack in treating high blood pressure regardless of a patient’s age and, if we are to reverse the present growth in cases of high blood pressure across much of the western world it would seem that we need to start by educating the medical profession.
