A monoclonal antibody, Pertuzumab is a drug designed to seek out and bind with prostate cancer cells which contain a protein known as epidermal growth factor which is know to play an important role in the growth of prostate cancer cells. The beauty of monoclonal antibodies is that they can be used as ‘carrier drugs’ to take other drugs or radioactive material directly to the site of cancer cells and thus to kill those cells without harming the surrounding healthy tissue. A number of such drugs are already in use treating different types of cancer and it is hoped that, once clinical trial are completed, Pertuzumab could be used for advanced prostate cancer treatment.
