pet obedience begins with preparing yourself to be the trainer.  Just like different people respond to different things, different animals respond differently, too.  For example, if you are training a horse, you would know that building trust first is the most important step.  If you are training a cat or a bird, they are very reward oriented.  You will need to do some research to determine what training method will work best for your pet.  Before you can begin to teach your pet any special tricks, you will need to train it to perform basic obedience.  It must come when called.  It must know basic stop and go commands like sit, walk, and stay.  It must know the boundaries of your relationship, such as whether or not it is allowed to sit on furniture, beg from the table, or jump on people.  Once your pet has mastered basic manners, you can move on to more advanced training.
