Rule 18 of the USGA rules of golf deals with moving a ball which is at rest, while rule 19 covers deflecting or stopping a ball which is in motion. Rule 18 details the circumstances under which a player will incur a penalty for moving a stationary ball and covers such things as a ball which is moved while searching for it, while removing movable obstructions, while repairing a hole plug or ball mark and while placing or replacing a ball under the terms laid down elsewhere within the rules. Rule 19 details the procedure to be followed where a ball in motion is accidentally deflected or stopped by a stationary or moving object.
